Library-Technical Services Student Specialist

Job Summary 

The Technical Services Student Specialist is an integral member of the library’s Collections & Technical Services team. This position provides valuable support in various tasks related to the processing of new book acquisitions, basic copy cataloging, the facilitation of interlibrary loan processes and general support of collections-focused projects. The student specialist will be supervised by the library’s Technical Services Coordinator.  

First Year or Sophomore. All Majors. In good academic standing. 

Specific Responsibilities

  • Assist in the processing of newly acquired library material, including unpacking shipments, applying identification labels, and preparing materials for cataloging.
  • Support the cataloging process by performing basic copy cataloging tasks, such as searching library databases, inputting bibliographic information, assigning call numbers, and adding necessary metadata.
  • Support ILL borrowing and lending services by retrieving, packaging and labeling items for shipment, scanning articles, and maintaining accurate records of borrowed and loaned materials.
  • Assist in maintaining the library's collection by shelving materials, ensuring proper organization, and conducting periodic inventory checks.
  • Work with library staff to identify missing or misplaced items and take necessary steps to locate or replace them.
  • Update and maintain accurate records of inventory using the library's integrated library system (ILS) or other designated tools.
  • Support various projects and initiatives within the Technical Services department as assigned by the supervisor, which may include data entry, record-keeping, and other administrative tasks.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of the Library of Congress Classification System (LC)
  • Ability to learn basic copy cataloging tasks, such as searching for bibliographic records and inputting metadata.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in performing tasks related to cataloging, inventory management, and collection maintenance.
  • Ability to work with a diverse range of library materials, including books, journals, and media.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Proficient in time management skills to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines effectively.
  • Capacity to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and manage time efficiently

Education

First Year or Sophomore. All Majors. In good academic standing. 

 Experience

  • Familiarity with library systems.
  • Basic knowledge of library organizational systems preferred.
  • Previous experience working in a library or related field preferred.

This position is paid $9.05 per hour, with an estimate of 10 hours weekly.
