Institutional Effectiveness Student Assistant

The Office of Institutional Effectiveness (IE) is part of the Division of Academic Affairs and is responsible for:

-  collecting campus data and ensuring that it’s available for internal decision-making and external reporting

-  overseeing and/or advising campus assessment projects

-  playing a significant role in university planning and accreditation efforts

Student Assistants in Institutional Effectiveness support data collection, analysis and dissemination efforts. This position incorporates many aspects of an internship and focuses on skill-building. While even one year in IE will include valuable learning opportunities, multiple years in this role will result in being well-positioned to apply for entry-level jobs in institutional research after graduation.

Specific Responsibilities

-  Oversee data collection for external surveys, such as US News & World Report and the US Department of Education. This includes:

o Comparing the current survey questions to the previous year.
o Reaching out to campus officials to collect data to complete the survey.

 o Collecting all survey data in one, archived location.
o Completingt he online survey on behalf of the university.

-  Perform online research to collect data on other institutions of higher education and provide an analysis or summary of findings.

-  Contribute to the creation of internal documents, such as the Fact Book, that provide campus colleagues with data annually.

-  Provide support for campus assessment projects and surveys. This may include communication, marketing, incentives, etc.

-  Meet bi-weekly with the Assistant Director of Institutional Effectiveness to discuss completed projects and receive new ones.

-  Check email regularly for updates and requests.

-  Keep an open line of communication with the Assistant Director regarding the status of projects,

including issues, concerns, questions, etc.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

-  Entering and manipulating data with Microsoft Excel; including the use of formulas and pivot tables to analyze and audit data.

-  Ability to compose professional emails requesting data from campus administrators.

-  Strong organizational skills to ensure quality and security of data.

-  Ability to manage projects and time as well as communicate in a timely manner if deadlines or deliverables are not on track.

-  Familiarity with design tools such as Microsoft PowerPoint and the Adobe Creative Suite.

Learning Objectives

-  Students will learn how colleges and universities collect, maintain, and provide data to outside sources for recruitment, accreditation and required reporting.

-  Students will learn how campus administrators use data to make decisions.

-  Students will learn which data points are tracked by the university and why.

-  Students will learn how campus surveys are created, their intended outcomes and how the resulting data impacts the student experience.

Education

All class years are eligible for this position. All academic programs are also eligible; however, the learning objectives may be most beneficial to students in the social sciences.

Experience

Experience working in a professional office helpful but not required.

Location

A designated workspace in the Center for Academic Success on the 2nd floor of Fisher Hall.

Additional Requirements

-  This position requires set weekly work times, which will be determined after review of academic schedule.

o Ideally ,student assistants area available to work 8-12 hours per week.A minimum of 6 hours per week is required.

o Work hours will take place Monday-Friday between 9am and4pm.

-  The position is considered a Level 2-Specialist because it is project oriented.

o As of8/15/24 ,the hourly pay rate for Level2 student employees is $7.50.

-  Due to the sensitive nature of much of the data involved in IE work, all student assistants are

required to sign a confidentiality agreement prior to being hired and complete online training provided by the SU Office of Human Resources.

Physical Demand

-  Position mainly involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time.

-  Position requires the ability to talk and to hear instruction.

-  Position requires manual dexterity and the ability to use fingers, hands, and arms to type, feel, handle, and reach.

-  Position requires the ability to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, exerting up to 10 pounds of force and a negligible amount of force including the human body.

-  Working conditions are indoors.
